Hedgehogs, hedgehogs everywhere
A plea for donations of food for the many baby and junior hedgehogs admitted over the autumn and now being cared for at the centre prompted me to arrange to visit the Folly Wildlife Rescue Trust at Danegate, Eridge a few days ago. Armed with some packs of kitten food I met Dave Risley who showed me round. It’s a wonderful place. Each little hedgehog has its own cage, with a sleeping box and food and water bowls. Those which are particularly small are in the intensive care ward where each cage has an overhead heater and the animals are closely monitored, particularly for weight gain.

The number of creatures Folly help in the course of the year is astonishing, taking in over 3000 animals and birds in 2006 as well as dealing with 3000+ helpline calls. They operate 2 ambulances, one fully equipped for almost any situation. The operation has grown so much that they are now the primary wildlife rescue centre for East Sussex and Kent. This all means that they are bursting at the seams and 20 months ago the decision was made to establish a wildlife hospital, education centre and release facility somewhere in the area. Over £70,000 of the initial £100,000 required to purchase a suitable site has been raised so it is hoped that the project can get off the ground within the next 18 months.

If you come across a wild animal in crisis call their helpline: 07957 949 825. If you are unfortunate enough to hit a deer, call the Police who can alert either the RSPCA or if required, a marksman who can end its suffering.      Susan Piccioni
